Standing up for Buckingham
My name is Carol O’Neal and I am the Labour Party candidate for Buckingham ward in the forthcoming local elections. Voting in local elections is the most direct way of influencing the decisions affecting the immediate environment in which we live and work. If you are a Buckingham resident, I hope that you will allow me to represent you on Adur District Council for the next four years.
I have lived in Adur for sixteen years and in Sussex since 1983, when I moved into the county to run a rural sub-post office. My long and varied career has included employment in schools, colleges and universities, working with people with learning disabilities, and as a voluntary tutor of Literacy and Numeracy to adults.
On a personal note, I am a mother and grandmother, with my youngest ’child’ still in higher education, and I have direct responsibility for two elderly relatives, for whom the provision of health and social care is a constant cause for concern. As such, I am acutely aware of the financial and emotional pressures on families and their toll on family life.
I have never sought public office before, but the time has come to take a stand against the paring down, dismantling and privatisation of our public assets and services, and to deplore the levels of deprivation that exist even in a relatively-affluent town like Shoreham. I believe that a further decline in the quality and scope of our locally-run essential services, coupled with the relentless pursuance of the austerity programme, threatens the notion of what it means to live in a civilised society.
As your local councillor my priorities would be:
- Affordable homes for those on the council waiting list
- Adequate resourcing of our schools
- More robust monitoring of air quality in and around Shoreham
Wherever you live in Adur I would urge you to vote for a party that puts people at the heart of its policies. Our strong and dynamic Labour team offers an approach that is compassionate, principled and relevant to the challenges that we face in our communities. The alternative is more of the same. To put an end to the complacency and sense of entitlement of the current administration, and to effect real change for the people of Adur, please vote Labour on the 3rd May – For the Many Not the Few.
