East Worthing and Shoreham Labour Party announce candidate for Southlands By-election
East Worthing and Shoreham Labour Party have announced their candidate for the upcoming October 11th By-election in Southlands Ward. Deborah Stainforth, known as Debs, is a mother of two school-aged children and lives in Shoreham-by-Sea. She is currently completing her training as a community psychologist and has a wealth of relevant experience having worked in housing, homelessness and family work for many years. Debs has pledged to be a voice for all in Southlands.
Debs said “I’ve worked for lots of Councils and I know what works well and what needs to change. I’m going to work hard to build community resources in Southlands and make sure the Council listens to residents and does its job properly.”
At 36%, Southlands Ward has the highest percentage of children living in poverty in Adur and Deborah is keen to continue the good work of Labour councillors who have recently stopped the removal of income tax support for very low-income families.
Debs said “I’m angry that Tories are slashing funding to schools, getting rid of housing support and destroying support for all vulnerable people. I’m horrified that they are selling off our NHS under our noses, and people are dying. These decisions affect us nationally and locally. I will fight for our friends and families and I will work with the community to find alternative solutions and to get proper funding back.”
Southlands has the lowest percentage of privately owned homes in Adur and highest proportion of homes rented from a social landlord or local authority and so Deborah intends to work with other Labour Councillors to fight for truly affordable housing for local people and improvements on housing repairs for tenants.
Debs said “Good quality, truly affordable housing is such an important issue for our area. I believe that the people who live in an area know what’s best for their community and I will listen and work with them to make it happen.”
In recent months the newly elected Adur Labour Councillors have spoken against the Adur Local Plan and Councillor allowances. Debs is seeking to join Labour’s recently elected Southlands Councillor, Lavinia O’Connor to be a stronger voice in council for the people of Southlands. Councillor O’Connor said, “Debs has the experience, the integrity and the enthusiasm to make an excellent councillor and I can’t wait for her to join me to make a real difference.”
Note to editors-
A Community Profile for the Adur District and the Worthing Borough in 2014 showed that Adur is the most deprived local authority in West Sussex.
Southlands Ward currently has one of the highest index of multiple deprivation of all wards in Adur. This is made up of a number of parameters including income, crime and education.
