Proposals are being drawn up for new councils in West Sussex replacing today’s district and county councils. Please give us your view on the best option in the survey here.

One big question is whether you think a giant single council covering all of West Sussex would be best or two smaller councils. The other is who should Adur link up with – other areas like Worthing and Littlehampton along our coast or northwards to Horsham, Haywards Heath and Crawley?

Jeremy Gardner, leader of Adur District Council, said: “The leaders of all seven district and borough councils in West Sussex, including Worthing leader Sophie Cox and me, are agreed that two new authorities have the potential to deliver more accountable, efficient and responsive local services, better reflecting the scale and character of our communities, and ensure decisions are taken closer to the people they affect.”

“I have said from the start of this process that local voices must be heard and be able to influence a new council. That can happen with two councils but would be so much harder with once council for all 900,000 West Sussex residents.

A unitary authority combining the work of the county and district councils is a great opportunity to do things better and to coordinate local services. Let’s get the size of the council right so that can happen.
