Housing is a basic human need and right. Our council is working to provide more homes for our community and to support local people at risk of homelessness. - Councillor Lee Cowen, standing for re-election in Mash Barn ward, 7 May.
It's a big aim but we want to see everyone have a home where they can feel comfortable and safe. That's important for health and wellbeing and for strong communities. - Councillor Pauline Higgins
People have a right to a roof over their head. Our communities need more affordable homes. Our Labour council is delivering and improving homes.
- We’re spending more than £10m to improve our council homes. That ranges from adaptations to support people with a physical disability through replacement windows, entry systems to kitchen and bathroom replacements.
- We are building new council homes. Once repairs to the Albion Street block in Southwick are complete and we have a watertight building local people will be moving into 49 council homes there. More are being built in Lancing.
- We have introduced Adur Homes drop-in surgeries for council home tenants
- We are working with housing associations so that more people on our council waiting list are moving into new homes in their developments. Dozens have already done so and that number will grow in the coming year.
- More homes – 21 – will be coming through agreement with Worthing Homes at the Ashcroft Road site in Kingston Lane.
- We are putting more money into supporting local people at risk of homelessness. At the end of November 2025 161 local households – families, mums with children and individuals, were in temporary accommodation.
