Adur Labour councillors have welcomed Adur District Council’s decision to refer itself to the Regulator of Social Housing. Action is needed to ensure Adur Homes provides a good service to its residents.

Adur Labour group leader Councillor Lee Cowen said:

“The tenants and leaseholders of Adur Homes have faced miserable conditions for far too many years, often including damp, disrepair and rodent infestations. There has been chronic underinvestment, with a failure to deliver a scheme of planned maintenance and repair. This has resulted in the condition of all the homes deteriorating – with tenants suffering as a result. When residents ring to report a repair, they don’t get a good enough service. This is public money which is being wasted by not properly looking after public assets.”

Labour councillors have highlighted a range of problems – including a lack of compliance with basic safety regulations, at many council meetings over the last five years. The service has been struggling for far too long, and instead of providing leadership, the Tory administration appears to have buried its head in the sand. They have presided over the deterioration of its council housing stock, and many homes have been left empty for long periods. Local Labour councillors have spoken up for our tenants, and about the need to look after our public assets, and will work with the council to ensure that our residents get an improved service. We hope that staff will get the support they need to turn this around.
