Adur councillors agreed to “explore all options” to keep the young people’s support organisation Esteem in its home at Ham Road, Shoreham. A motion from Labour councillors Lee Cowen and Jeremy Gardner was unanimously supported at Adur council’s meeting last week.

Councillor Lee Cowen (Mash Barn ward) said: “The council owns the building they reside in and has given notice that they are considering selling the building. This is a community asset with important tenants who do great work and a useful space for other charities.

“The unique fabric of the building is conducive to the work of the charity. The range of rooms allows a range of activities including counselling.”

Councillor Jeremy Gardner (St Mary’s ward) said: “One of the overarching themes of ESTEEM that is that they provide space for young people. It is important for young adults is that they have space where they can learn, where they can feel at ease and listened to. In this building ESTEEM has found a space that works for them and young people. Let’s explore all options to make this a long-term home for ESTEEM.”

The resolution was designed to affirm the council’s continued commitment to assisting young adults aged 14-26 in overcoming complex personal challenges and reaffirm its’ partnership with ESTEEM. The charity’s advice has also extended to national third-sector organizations, including UK Youth, Young Minds, and Buttle UK.

The resolution followed a recent visit to The Old School House on Ham Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea, where several council members witnessed ESTEEM’s work firsthand. They were impressed by the young adults and staff who shared their stories and the historic building that support the charity’s mission.

Discussions are underway between the council and ESTEEM on its future in the building.
